The goal of this project is to create prebuilt, i686 optimized, packages for slackware 10. Slackware 10 is a great distribution, but we live in a modern world and we have modern processors, but slackware 10 still ships with i486 packages and this project wants to offer packages for the i686 machines. In some cases even i386 packages are available. Slackware is fast enough, though, but optimized packages would be great for slackware, especially for the desktop. The software the project wants to offer is only opensource software, which is also available in source on berliOS.de and it’s offered on a portal-website, which is already done, so we can start quickly. The prebuilt packages are in the *.tgz-format, which is well known by slackware-users, so it’s easy to install for them. The reason for this project is the lack of good, available packages for slackware 10 and it’s often the case that prebuilt packages are built with a current version of slackware, which can cause several errors if using this package. We use the stable Slackware 10 to build the packages, so every normal slackware user is able to use the prebuilt packages out of the box. We want to concentrate on desktop software, because that’s the category where the most interest is given. Examples are The Gimp, Sodipodi, Inkscape, mediaplayers, some little games and all useful software. We don’t want to package every software, which is available for linux. We only select the best pieces of software and built the package so that every slackware user can download a file and install it directly with “installpkg”. We also don’t want to build packages which are already available from the slackware dot com site, because that would be insane and that’s not the goal of the project. Another goal of this project is to test every package, which will be released, and only if the packaged software runs stable, the package will be distributed. Otherwise the specific software will not be packaged. This assures that only the best software is offered on the website. I created Slackplanet using PHP, MySQL, XHTML, Javascript, CSS, Linux, Slackware .
